How can I make steampunk props for costumes out of recycled materials?
Umbrella Progress
The frame is made from an umbrella we've had for years and it didn' service it's purpose as well as we would've like. The 'cloth' of the umbrella is made of extra canning rings from around the house. It is clear that I am missing some rings. I had a few that were white and didn't want to put them on. This weekend (fall break) I will be going back home where I can get the proper rings. The rings are held together by craft wire that was a graduation present.
Originally, I wanted toad clock faces to some of the rings. Now I am thinking that i will just add random gears to them. Any ideas?
I'm planning on removing the original handle/clamp and replacing it with a wooden handle. There is also a spring on the stem. I will be keeping the spring and painting it gold or copper. Any of the visible white plastic will also be spray painted. I will use spray paint at home that was leftover from a previous costume. If time allows, I will try to create a new point at the end of the umbrella. The wood shop in the art building has scraps of wood I could use.

Costume Progress
I have sort of looked online for patterns to make a costume. This weekend Jo-Ann Fabrics is having a $0.99 sale on selected patterns this weekend. I have alot of fabric at home so I chose my favorite that had the most yards. If time and amount of cloth allows, I will be making the top left dress seen in the first sketch. I do not believe that I will have enough cloth or time, so my backup is the top right right dress seen in the first sketch. I already own the shirt and shoes.
Estimated price - $1
